Vanthof questions why only 14 of 17 ORs at Health Sciences North are being used

Timiskaming-Cochrane New Democratic MPP John Vanthof wants the Ford government to fund all 17 operating rooms at Health Sciences North in Sudbury – the hub hospital for the Northeast.

In the legislature, Vanthof said only 14 of those 17 ORs are being used, while the government is supporting private sector facilities for some surgeries and diagnostic procedures.

“The question I have for the government is why would the focus not be on using all 17? They’re there, they’re built,” he remarked.

“What’s the holdup? Staff and funding,” Vanthof added. “Who provides the funding? Ministry of Health through the provincial government.”

Vanthof says staff would stay in public hospitals, if the government didn’t cap their salaries.
