Annual ride for cancer this weekend

The Cochrane Classic Vintage Riders Snowmobile Club has its 14th annual Tom Saul Memorial Ride this Saturday.

Executive member Dan Girard says registration begins around 9:00am in the Polar Bear Habitat parking lot.  The ride to Abitibi Campground pulls out at 10:30.

“It’s not just for vintage sleds. Anybody can come, even if they have a brand new sled,” Girard notes. “We’re not going to diss them and we’re not going to look bad on them at all. We just want people to come and enjoy it.”

Riders are asked to pay a $10.00 entry fee.  They can also collect pledges.

Girard says the money is for  the chemotherapy room at Lady Minto Hospital, in honour of Saul.

“Tom fought a 13-year battle with cancer. After the very first ride, a couple months later, Tom was gone. He was a guy that even how sick he was, he would always show up to meetings, just to be with everybody, that kind of a guy.”

The 50km round trip is to the Abitibi Campground and back.  While at the campground, there is coffee, hot chocolate, hot dogs and raffles for several prizes.
