Cochrane team sweeping for gold in U-18 girls provincial curling

Look out, Northern Ontario curling. Team Marfil from Cochrane is out to take the U-18 provincial girls title this week at the Granite Club in North Bay.

Coach Brittany Martin says she got to know her four charges last year, before moving up to be head coach this year.

“We’ve been working really hard, doing lots of drills and my players always attend practice and they have a couple games per week,” she notes. “So we’ve been preparing. We’re doing okay so far.”

The games Team Marfil has been in are in the Thursday night league, and sometimes against their coach and a couple other people who challenge them.

Martin says the four members are positive and boost each other up.

“Skip is Lexi Marfil. She is 16. Vice is Rihanna, she’s 15. My second is Julie Bernatchez, she’s 15 and my lead is Olivia Shanks, 15 as well.”

Coach Martin says the foursome adapts its strategy to developments during a game.

The winner and runner-up in the provincial tournament in North Bay qualify for the national championship in Timmins next month.

Martin says regardless of the outcome, this is a great experience for her team.
