Cochrane history: Snowmobiling in 1995 put the town in the TV spotlight

Snowmobiling is undeniably part of Cochrane’s history. And in our weekly local history feature, we go back to November, 1995, when our town played a role in a TSN show on snowmobiling.

Public library archivist Ardis Proulx-Chedore reads from a Cochrane Times front page story.

“TSN’s snowmobile show Raceline Snow Trax was in Cochrane to test two new snowmobiles, the Skidoo MX7-583 and the newest Polaris Touring machine. ‘We had to go where the snow was,’ said executive producer and host John Massingberd. On Tuesday, the crew hit the trail, testing the machines on a specially groomed section of the Genier loop.”

“The opening episode was shot in front of Chimo and the Board of Trade building. Tuesday morning’s shoot also included a segment on shop safety and loading and unloading machines at Bourque Auto Sales.”

Planning was underway for the show to return a couple months later, to profile the Polar Bear Riders and take in the Moosonee excursion.

Thanks to the Cochrane Public Library for its contribution to our weekly history feature.
