Photo of the week: The official opening of the Abitibi Community Arena, 1957

This week’s hunt for clues from a photograph in the collection of the Iroquois Falls Pioneer Museum is from 1957, and the official opening of what was then the Abitibi Community Arena.

Museum volunteer Danny McIntyre says it’s a group of young skaters performing a pageant, dressed as a royal procession.

“The two skaters in front are Pierre Lamarche and Larry Porter,” he points out.

Pierre Lamarche actually gave the photo to the museum. He and Larry Porter are in front of a princess.

“We suspect she’s the oldest Jordan girl,” McIntyre adds.

The arena was designed and construction supervised by then Abitibi Paper Company engineer Jus Jordan.  McIntyre is looking for the names of most of the skaters.

“What they have is the key to the building, then they present it to the princess behind them, who then presents it to Jus Jordan.”

Jordan designed the arena and led the all-volunteer construction project.  The arena now bears his name.
