What you shouldn’t do with the snow in your yard: Cochrane bylaw enforcement officer

Now that winter has set in, Cochrane’s municipal bylaw enforcement officer is advising us of what the snow bylaw says.

Kurtis King says when clearing your driveway, be a good neighbour.  Don’t dump it in the yard next door, and don’t shovel it out onto the street.

“When people are depositing snow in the roadway, it can result in narrowing of the roadways” he says, ”it can result in snow being plowed into your neighbour’s driveway, it could result in blocking signs, it could create traffic hazards.”

King says he gets a few complaints every year.

“Sometimes it’s new residents. They might not be aware of the issue, sometimes it could be a repeat offender, so what we do try to do is we try to educate everyone.”

There’s a very fine line between complying with the bylaw, and maintaining good neighbourhood relations.
