If educational support workers go on strike, English Catholic schools will close

Should education workers represented by CUPE go on strike on Friday, the 12 elementary schools and one high school operated by the Northeastern District Catholic School Board will close.

Director of education Tricia Weltz says learning will switch to the virtual platform, to keep students engaged in learning.

She adds it will be a little different than during the pandemic, and asks for patience from families.

“Our ICT staff will also be on strike and so there won’t be any support services available from information/communication technology.”

Weltz emphasizes, however, that the best education is in school, in person.

“The reality is that without CUPE education workers on site,” she notes, “we cannot ensure safe conditions for all of our students.”

Over at the English public board (DSB1) so far, the plan is to keep schools open as long as they’re safe.
