The Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni will be in Cochrane on Sunday, October 30th, for a fundraising hockey game, sponsored by the nearby Taykwa Tagamou First Nation.
TTN deputy chief Derek Archibald says it’s in support of the Alumni efforts towards reconciliation and calls to action.
“We do have a good partnership with the Leafs Alumni Association,” he says, “and their efforts to recognize the impact northern Indigenous players have made.”
Archibald says it recognizes the importance of sports to Indigenous youth, “who don’t always have the same access as the kids in urban communities, so we’re removing the barriers to give them an experience that they’ll never forget, and a glimpse at their possible future.”
Archibald hopes they realize they could make it, like Jordan Tootoo and Jonathan Cheechoo did, among other Indigenous NHL players.
Free tickets are available through Eventbrite. A silent auction of art from the area will support the Taykwa Tagamou youth recreation department.
