Remembrance Day art, poetry contest is offered by Royal Canadian Legion in Cochrane

A Remembrance Day art and poetry contest is open in Cochrane.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 89 youth education chair Ardis Chedore says it’s for kids from kindergarten to Grade 12, in school or home schooled.

“We have a lot of different categories,” she states. “and it’s a really good opportunity for people to showcase their artwork as well as their literary expertise.”

The common thread for the poetry or poster is Remembrance. Chedore says the adults in entrants’ lives can encourage them by sharing their military experiences.

“Say for instance you have a  grandfather who’s a veteran,” she elaborates. “Maybe you want to talk to him and get his insight into what his experience was and then you can put that either into your poster or your poetry.”

Entry forms are available at the branch and the Cochrane Public Library.  All the work will be displayed on November 11th and judged on the 12th.  There are prizes, and local winners could move on to zone, provincial and national levels.  The ultimate national winners get a trip to Ottawa for 2023 Remembrance Day observances.
