Tournament walleye fishing hits Kapuskasing this weekend

More than 250 Walleye anglers from across the province will be in Kapuskasing this weekend. It’s the return of Kap River Walleye Tournament and the final leg of the Northern Ontario Walleye Tour Championship. Spokesperson Dean Bliss says competitors will be coming from as far west as Thunder Bay and from the London and Exeter area in the south.

He adds the Kapuskasing River provides anglers with some challenging opportunities.

“Over 55 kilometres of water so that poses a challenge,” he said. “It’s one of the longest runs if you want to call it that. The most water you can fish right. The challenge is there right because there are so many places to fish.”

Bliss says despite the high water levels fishing has remained strong for most of the summer.

Fishing begins Friday and concludes Saturday and everyone is invited out to watch the final weigh-in either on social media or at the Sports Palace. More than $100,000 in cash and prizes will be handed out to the winners of both events.
