Corrections officer takes on half Iron Man in support of a mother and her son with autism

Monteith Correctional Centre officer Pat Lafleur is planning to complete a half  Iron Man event at Nellie Lake on September 2nd. He’ll swim 1.9 kilometres in Nellie Lake… run a half marathon and bike for 90 kilometres. It’s a fundraiser he and his union are using to help a small, needy family they’ve adopted as their own.

OPSEU Local 642 president Eric Davies says the widow and her son who has severe autism came to the Timmins area from Nepal seven years ago.  The son needs constant supervision.

“Due to Covid difficulties, the place that was looking after her son is no longer to look after her son and so she had to leave her job in order to stay home, because she’s on her own,” says Davies.

“He’s going to have some issues growing up and he’s going to need some surgeries and some extra care. We know it’s a drop in the bucket, but at least we can do something to help. That’s all that really matters.”

Davies adds this is a way to support the community. A gofundme page has been established for your contributions.
