George Pirie sworn in as Mines Minister in Ford Cabinet

Newly elected Timmins MPP George Pirie was sworn in as Mines Minister in Doug Ford’s Cabinet today.

“I George Pirie swear that I will duly and faithfully to the best of my knowledge, best of my skill and knowledge execute the powers of trust in me as the Minister of Mines of the province of Ontario. So help me God….,” Pirie said.

Pirie, who was is the former Timmins Mayor, takes over the portfolio with many years of experience in the mining industry and having grown up on the former Dome Mines housing site.

The Ministry of Mines portfolio also includes a mandate to develop the ring of fire.

In his remarks today, Premier Doug Ford mentioned Northeastern Ontario.

“And to the people of Northeastern Ontario, you have my word that we will bring the Northlander back to Timmins and Cochrane,” Ford said.

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli is back as Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade while Stephen Lecce returns as Education Minister, Peter Bethlenfalvy as Minister of Finance and Caroline Mulroney as Transportation Minister. Another notable addition is Sylvia Jones as Deputy Premier and Health Minister, the spots became open after Christine Elliott decided not to run again. Ford has announced a rare summer session in the Ontario Legislature so that the budget can be passed.
