Stardust Festival coming to Cochrane

“Where no one has gone before” will be Cochrane, between August 1st and 6th.

Jason Michaud CEO of the locally-based aerospace defence company Stardust Technologies is organizing his first Stardust Festival.

Up to 400 students from across North America are expected for the event to encourage pursuing science, technology, engineering and math.

Among a long list of activities is the launch of university student-built model rockets up to 30 feet long, as far 40,000 feet up.

Michaud says it will happen in the bush 40 kilometres north of Cochrane.

“You’d think it’d be a lot easier to launch rockets in the fields in the Prairies,” he observes, “but it’s more complex to do that there, because there’s houses everywhere and you need every house to basically bless the rocket.”

Michaud says it’s harder to retrieve the rockets in Northern Ontario, because of all the Bob Ross-style happy trees.

Most of the program is at the Tim Horton Event Centre. On the first evening is a Canadian reception for all of the festival’s international participants and guests.

“Basically, a poutine bar, in flannel teams,” Michaud divulges. “So we’re going the full lumberjack team to have something a little difference from our colleagues in the US in the space events.”

Michaud says there are activities from toddlers through adults.  Details are on the website.
