Library archives reopen to public: What you need to know to research Cochrane history

We’re taking a break from our weekly Cochrane history feature to talk about the source of our stories: the archives department at the Cochrane Public Library.

Archivist Ardis Proulx-Chedore says the department is open to the public again, every Thursday from 2:00pm until 4:00pm.

“We haven’t been open downstairs now, it’s going on two years. We haven’t had the public down there. So there have been a lot of chang,” Proulx-Chedore notes. “A lot of new materials came in. So people are going to have a pleasant surprise that they’ll have some new stuff to go through. I guess new old stuff would be the way to say it.”

You don’t need an appointment. Just drop in any Thursday afternoon.  It’s helpful to tell her the subject matter that interests you, and a year or name.

“General requests, we can usually whittle it down,” she remarks “We give a series of questions to people. So they don’t need a lot, they just need to know what are they looking for and if they know a lot of details, that makes my job a lot easier.”

Even with minimal details, Proulx-Chedore is confident of getting you what you need.
