Angus takes credit for securing federal funding for record number of summer jobs

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus says it’s going to be a good summer for student jobs across the riding.  The New Democrat has secured funding for a record 526 positions under the Canada Summer Jobs Program.

One way he’s looking at it is from the perspective of helping small businesses recover from the devastation they suffered during the pandemic.  Angus says he negotiated with the government to give them a hand up.

“Tourism operations that were just hammered,” he specifies. “Can we get some young people in so that they can expand their operations and take advantage of the summer?”

Angus says the jobs program removes the burden of having to pay those students during financial recovery.

He adds that it’s a really good deal, providing a lot of opportunities for young people.

“You could have anything from learning to be an environmental technician at Blue Heron Environmental to working at the downtown business BIA, to working with the Timmins District Humane Society or the Anti Hunger Coalition.”

Funding for the jobs is spread out across Timmins-James Bay, including Englehart, Kirkland Lake, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson and right up the coast.
