Opening ceremony set for garden on Ininew Friendship Centre’s cultural grounds

For the second year, Cochrane’s Ininew Friendship Centre is planting a vegetable garden at its cultural grounds on Genier Road.

It’s part of the “Let’s Eat” program. Coordinator Betty Rickard says her clients help tend the garden, as they learn about healthy eating.

“The reason why we did the garden is it gives a new skill and hobbies,” says Rickard. “It gives Indigenous people a sense of belonging in urban settings. It allows opportunities for knowledge, sharing.”

“We’ll be planting tomatoes, green peppers, kale, spinach and all that. It comes to the Friendship Centre and then I distribute it to my clients.” That helps her introduce those clients to healthy eating of healthy foods.

An elder will perform an opening ceremony at the garden at 10:00am Sunday, May 29th.
