The forest fire evacuation of 50 homes in Shining Tree that was put into effect on Saturday is still in place. The blaze just southeast of Morin Village has grown to 1,467 hectares.
Natural resources ministry forest fire information officer Isabelle Chenard says every night since Thursday, “aerial fire suppression” (water bombing) has been used.
“That fire, with the hot, dry windy conditions have some elevated fire activity later on in the day pretty consistently over the weekend,” she reports.
Shining Tree is on Hwy. 560, south of Timmins.
The other fire reported near there last week is now under control at 57 hectares. So is one that’s 60 hectares large, along the rail line southeast of Foleyet.
Chenard says that cooler weather forecast for this week is good news.
“But we are expecting the winds to continue being in the moderate rang,” she adds. “The forest fuel is quite dry right now with the extended warm, dry temperatures we’ve seen over the last couple of weeks in the Northeast.”
As of Monday afternoon, there are no forest fires north of the Hwy. 11 corridor between Kirkland Lake and the Manitoba border.
