Smooth Rock Falls mayor pleased with progress of JP Parise project

The tribute sign for Smooth Rock Falls native and former National Hockey League star Jean Paul Parise is coming along well, according to Mayor Sue Perras. She says the town received special funding from North Claybelt Community Future Development Corporation to go along with money that was already set aside for the project. She adds that the location of the sign is being finalized.

“We’re looking at Kelly Park,” she said. “You know the entrance of Smooth Rock going east by the bridge. There is a little park there that has all kinds of flags and all of that. Well we are looking at putting it there.”

Perras says the town is waiting on approval from the Ontario Transportation Ministry before going ahead.

A possible date for the ceremony is September 28th which is the 50th anniversary of Team Canada’s win over Russia in the 72 Summit Series. Parise was a member of that team

“We’re going to be inviting family members to come, the Board of Directors of Team Canada to come be with us to actually unveil the sign,” she said.
