New York Times exhibit features Kapuskasing

A display about Kapuskasing and its mill has been created at the New York Times newspaper museum. Curator David Dunlap says he was fascinated about the relationship and history Kapuskasing and the Times had dating back to when the newspaper co-owned the mill with Kimberly Clark. He adds the exhibit includes a number of photos published in a 1930s book.

“An aerial view overall of the town and one is an overall aerial view of the paper  mill itself,” he said. “And then there is also a large photograph showing the arrival of Spruce Falls paper on West 43rd street.”

Dunlap says due to the location of the offices the rolls of paper had to be shipped daily to print the next days’ edition.

The New York Times and Kimberly Clark sold the mill to the employees and Tembec in the early 1990s, but the paper continued to be printed on Kapuskasing newsprint until 2003.

The museum is closed to the public because It’s located on the 15th floor of the new offices, but private tours are available to those from the Kapuskasing area who want to see it.
