Thanks, but no thanks: Iroquois Falls food bank operator to well meaning volunteer

The owner of Iroquois Falls New and Used is politely declining the offer of help from the well meaning Laura Thomas.  David Strauss says it’s not necessary to organize a food drive, or other help for the food bank that  he operates in his store.

“We have enough food to last us six months without buying any,” he asserts.

Strauss responds to Thomas’s concerns about a lack of eggs, proteins and fruit by pointing out their short shelf life. They go bad before they can be distributed.  And he freezes milk.

“As long as it’s froze before the due date, it’s fine,” he says. “But once we freeze it, nobody wants it.”

Strauss says the offer of volunteer help would be accepted at certain times, but he already has two volunteers who take care of the food shelves.

Then there’s the issue of supply and demand. “Since the COVID hit, our food bank clientele has dropped to less than half.”

Strauss figures that’s because of CERB and other government assistance related to the pandemic.
