Winter announces its impending arrival

In the grand scheme of things, winter has done little more than tease us so far this year.  But it’s going to flex its muscles tonight, and move in until spring.

Environment Canada has a winter weather travel advisory in effect for our entire region, from the Hearst-Kapuskasing area, right down through Cochrane, Timmins and beyond.  It takes the form of a strong cold front racing through the area between Sunday afternoon into Monday.

It will begin as wet snow or rain Sunday afternoon and evening, changing to overnight snow or flurries.  A strong northwest wind will cause blowing snow, and that reduces visibility.  The thermometer is expected to dip, too, causing icy roads and sidewalks. It’s predicted to hit -11C overnight, only getting up to -7C on Monday.

If you haven’t taken your shovel and/or snowblower out of the shed, garage or basement yet, you won’t want to put that off any longer.  We’ll wake up for the work week with anywhere from five to 15 centimetres (2-6 in.) of snow on the ground.

You can read the full advisory here.
