System of electing one mayor and six councillors remains at Cochrane Town Hall

Cochrane Town Council has turned a decisive thumbs-down on the idea of reducing its membership.  Mayor Denis Clement says a unanimous vote followed the receipt of three letters.

“They felt that six councillors was an adequate representation across the board,” the mayor reports. “Reducing by two would reduce that and also they argued that it could be more difficult to have quorum.”

Mayor Clement says another concern it heard from constituents is having only four councillors would reduce the diversity of opinion among elected officials.

“You certainly can’t argue that fact,” he comments. “It is a good idea to have diversity around a council table, to ensure you make the right decision.”

So when you go to vote next October, it will be for one mayor and six councillors.
