Three Grade 6 students at Iroquois Falls Public School are trying to start a chess club. Principal Rodger Mineault says Oscar Steudle, Kingston Bouchard and Kaleb Purdy brought the idea to him. And as Oscar Steudle points out, they need help from the community.
“We need some more chess boards because a lot of the chess boards at school are like low quality and there’s a lot of missing pieces in the chess boards,” he says.
Purdy and Steudle have similar ideas why the game is fun.
“It’s a fun game and it’s a strategic game and it’s like a puzzle and I really like puzzles,” Purdy states.
“I like strategies and like puzzles and stuff like that, same as Kaleb,” says Steudle “To me, it’s just fun to beat your friends.”
The club is open to students in Grades 4, 5 and 6, and any teacher who’s brave enough.
Principal Mineault says any school club in very important. Aside from being fun, he says chess is strategic, builds ciritical thinking and problem solving, as well as teaching looking ahead at planning future moves.
If you can donate a complete chess set, you’re asked to drop it off at the school on Centennial St.
