Hunter education course goes online along with classroom setting

The hunter education course that’s normally offered in a classroom setting is now available online. Natural Resources ministry education programs coordinator Will Johnson says the ministry’s been working towards this plan for a few years, and finally launched it in June.

“We are not replacing that we’re still maintaining that opportunity for students to reach out to an instructor and take an in person course,” he said. “And now we are offering an additional opportunity for students or another way for obtaining the same accreditation.”

Johnson says 4,600 people have been certified since day one. He adds one area won’t change and that’s firearms.

“Hunters who do want to hunt with a gun are required to carry proof of federal firearms accreditation, the Firearms Act of Canada,” he said. “So in order to get that accreditation option still requires completion of fire arms safety course. That’s really where that hands on training comes in with regards to the firearms.”

There are 13 different sections of the online hunting course to navigate through. Johnson says the course allows those interested to work at their own pace and schedule and help those who may not like in-person classes.
