Doctor coming to ease Cochrane GP shortage four days a month

A doctor from Windsor is coming to Cochrane four days a month, starting next week, to help alleviate the doctor shortage.

Dr. Mara Bilibajkich – she goes by “Dr. Mara” — will have a family medical clinic at Lady Minto Hospital.

MICS health care group CEO Paul Chatelain says the physician situation in Cochrane right now is critical.

“We just recently lost two physicians – one to retirement and one as a departure the last two months,” he observes. “So we have one family medical physician right now, GP physician for all of Cochrane.”

Chatelain adds that Dr. Mara expects to see 120 patients every four-day clinic.

“We’re struggling. We have a lot of orphan patients now. So we’re stuck, and they’re having to go to another facility, including Bingham Memorial Hospital to go see another doctor there.”

Bingham is 80 km away, in Matheson.

Dr. Bilibajkich has said that if she’s pleased with the clinic arrangement, she would consider moving to Cochrane.
