Timmins James Bay NDP candidate Charlie Angus: ‘Liberals don’t understand N. Ont.’

The incumbent New Democratic MP for Timmins-James Bay says the Liberals don’t understand Northern Ontario – they’re too focused on national party interests.

Charlie Angus was in Sudbury on Wednesday with NDP candidates from across the North, unveiling the party’s Northern Ontario platform.

He says there are a number of key issues.

“Immigration is going to play a huge role,” he predicts, “but we also need to encourage francophone immigration. So that’s different than other regions.”

On transportation, Angus says getting the feds back to the table on Northlander passenger rail serve would make a huge difference.

Then he takes aim at communications.

“The broadband issue has been killing us in the North with the fact that the government won’t initiate caps on the cell fees (and) we can’t compete unless we have better broadband.”
