District count of homeless goes Wednesday

A district-wide census of homeless people is seen as a step towards ending homelessness altogether. The one-day “Point in Time” – or PIT count is on Wednesday.

It involves workers from various social service agencies offering those experiencing homelessness $10.00 to voluntarily take a survey.

Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board housing director, Andy Blomberg says it’s an ongoing realtime list, “and will be used to connect people to a range of housing options and support services and will create a foundation for better coordination of services.”

DSSAB will also use the information to tailor its requests for government grants.

Blomberg adds that the study will enhance planning to respond to the needs of the homeless.

“It’ll also help us measure our program towards ending homelessness,” he remarks. “It’ll increase public awareness of homelessness and it will enhance our ability to test the effectiveness of our programs and interventions aimed at ending homelessness.”

The target to end homelessness in all 13 municipalities and the unorganized territories across the district remains the year 2025.
