The opening game of the World Series has gone to the Kansas City Royals. The Royals beat the New York Mets 5-4 in 14 innings. The Royals tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the ninth with a home run then scored the winning run from third thanks to a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Game 2 goes tonight in K-C.
The Montreal Canadiens failed to tie an NHL record for most consecutive wins to start the season. The Habs lost 5-1 to Vancouver after winning nine straight. Elsewhere, Edmonton lost to Minnesota 4-3 and L-A got by Winnipeg 4-1.
