Timmins native Meghan Mahon off to second straight Paralympic Games

Timmins native Meghan Mahon is off to her second straight Paralympics. She will head to Tokyo next month as a member of Canada’s goalball team.  Mahon, who now lives in Calgary, was born with achromatopsia, and has 10 per cent vision. She says the hometown support she has received from the region since the announcement shows her just how close of a community Timmins is.

“You know getting messages from people who have either come across once or interactive daily.,” she said. “All of those messages of support are just pouring in and its definitely a good overwhelming feeling.”

She credits her mom for letting her and her brother participate in school able-bodied activities and sports.

“In being able to support myself and my brother in anything that we wanted to do and find ways that didn’t have the vision take those opportunities away from us,” she said.

Goalball is a three-on-three competition for those with limited sight. Canada finished sixth in the Rio Paralympics and Mahon says the team is hoping to improve on that placing.
