Cochrane, 1994: The Second Mile Club and John Chapleau and his neat woodpile

Cochrane history time, and the front page of the second section of the Cochrane Times on May 21st, 1994.

It featured a profile of the Second Mile Club, in the big yellow building on Tenth Avenue.  It was originally owned by the hospital.  When it was going to be torn down, the town bought it for a dollar and preserved it.  Library archivist Ardis Proulx-Chedore reads from the story.

“’This is home to us,’ said Second Mile Club president John Decevito. “We couldn’t have this in a new complex. We’re more of a family here.’”

He was known for the neatness of the pile, at his home on Hwy. 652.  Proulx-Chedore (AR-diss reads, he said he liked cutting firewood after a shift on the ONR’s Gardiner section gang.

“I use wood and electric heat, but the electricity hardly ever clicks on, because I have lots of wood to burn.”
