Deal heralds the coming of high-speed internet to rural Cochrane

The T’s are crossed, the I’s dotted and EION Inc. has taken over management of Cochrane Telecom Services.

Work began late last year to have the operator of broadband networks in rural Canada buy 70 percent of the municipally-owned company, with Town Hall keeping the rest.

Mayor Denis Clement says the major reason behind the deal is to provide better service in the town’s rural areas.

“Our company in the present situation did not have the resources to continue and expand the network in order to provide high-speed internet to our rural customers,” the mayor remarks.

Those resources include wi-fi technology and expertise, as well as the money to upgrade the rural service.

“They are actually working on a plan as we speak in order to put up some towers in rural portions,” notes Mayor Clement.
