Permanent hybrid Parliament okay to Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus is embracing the idea of a hybrid Parliament, beyond the pandemic.

He says prior to COVID-19, he was old school, thinking members should be in the House of Commons, especially for votes.  But the remote participation that started last April meets with his approval.

“I think it’s time that we started looking at maybe having MPs more in their ridings and being able to participate virtually while still having other MPs coming in and being present,” he says now.

“It might make it easier, especially for MPS with young families.  It’s a killer life,” Angus remarks.  “This might be better and it might allow us also to be more in our ridings.”

One estimate from the parliamentary budget office is that a hybrid parliament would save $6.2-million annually.  Most of that would be from reduced travel costs.  Angus says it takes some MPs several flights to get back and forth to Ottawa from far-flung ridings.
