Ontario sees first case of South African COVID-19 variant

A Peel resident is Ontario’s first case of the South African variant of COVID-19.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams said Monday the case had no recent travel history and had no contact with anyone who did travel.

Dr. Williams said while this is the first case, it may not be the only one. He says he wouldn’t be shocked if the Brazilian variant of the virus is found as well.

He said the South African strain does appear to be more easily transmissible, but studies have yet to determine if the disease carries more severe symptoms and outcomes.
