State of emergency nixes Cochrane Winter Carnival for first time in 58-year existence

The Cochrane Winter Carnival isn’t exactly a victim of COVID-19… but it is a victim of the provincial state of emergency that takes effect at midnight.

Mayor Denis Clement says it was supposed to run from the fifth to the 15th of February.

“It’s unfortunate,” he laments. “It’d be the first time I believe that it’s been cancelled since its inception. I believe it was 1963.”

Meanwhile, the state of emergency reinforces what the town has been doing since the first one, last March.

“The municipal building will be closed to the public and our employees who can work from home will definitely be working from home.”

The mayor adds that outside workers are considered essential, so will keep plowing snow, picking up garbage and performing other tasks they’re known for.
