Iroquois Falls town council is moving ahead with a plan to move Town Hall from its almost 70-year-old, two-floor building on Main St. to the Earl Porter Lanes building on Synagogue Ave.
Mayor Pat Britton says it would cost too much to upgrade the existing location for accessibility requirements. A ramp itself would be $100,000 to $150,000.
He adds that the Chamber of Commerce has given notice that it won’t renew its contract on the bowling alley, which 25 years old.
“A lot of the work is done there already,” Britton points out. “So everything’s on the same floor, (and there is) a lot more parking than we have at Town Hall existing.”
”We could actually renovate the bowling alley where it is at a fraction of the cost.”
The building on Cambridge Avenue built in the 1960s as Happy Day School was considered. But the mayor says it sat vacant too long and was in too much disrepair for it to be affordable. It was demolished last week.
