Iroquois Falls gets shorted by Queen’s Park in municipal partnership money

When Queen’s Park announced its municipal partnership money for the coming year last week, some communities got a raise.  Not Iroquois Falls.

Mayor Pat Britton says the $2.1-million is just over $40,000 less than this year.

The municipal partnership money is only one source of provincial money.

He’s keeping his eye on another potential loss of revenue.

“We’ve got a lot of pipeline that runs through our municipality and they pay a fair chunk of our taxes to keep us afloat,” he explains, “and there’s rumours that they’re looking at maybe giving them some breaks, too, which is going to probably not help us.”

Mayor Britton is concerned about the overall effect on the 2021 town budget.

“It’s going to be a moving target. I mean we’re trying to keep our taxes at basically rate of inflation.  As mayor, I’m on the concerned side about where this is heading.”

Britton says the town is getting ready for some preliminary budgeting, and all he can do is wait to see “how the numbers crunch out”.
