First recorded Halloween and trick-or-treat in this area was in Iroquois Falls

In the history of this area, we learn that the first record of a celebration of Halloween and trick-or-treat is from Iroquois Falls in 1917.

Regional historian Karen Bachmann says because it was during the war, the town was divided into regiments, with a captain for each.

“Your regiment would visit one home and they would have either some sort of pranky thing for you to do, or you were bobbing for apples or you were dancing or whatever,” she says.

“So once everybody had gone through, they gathered up at the town hall and then they continued to party well into the next day with dancing and card parties and food and all those good things.”

For the record, the first Halloween in Canada was celebrated in Vancouver in 1898.
