The MP for Timmins-James Bay is pleased that the CRTC has green lighted one of Elon Musk’s companies to start testing satellite-delivered internet service in Canada.
New Democrat Charlie Angus says Starlink will allow high-speed broadband service in rural and isolated northern communities.
“Too often, the CRTC bends over backwards to help the giant telecoms,” he remarks. “They’re not helping our people in the North, so the Starlink proposal gives people in rural, isolated communities a chance to get internet. Right on, let’s do it.”
Angus says new competition might also mean lower charges for internet.
He also notes that the pandemic has shown that everyone needs internet, regardless of where they live. He says people in small communities working and learning from home don’t have access to broadband service.
“So I’m really glad that the efforts that we made and many others have gotten the service approved. For some people, this will be the lifeline to internet services in the second wave of the pandemic.”
