Hardware store one of oldest buildings in downtown Cochrane

Part of Cochrane’s charm is the number of century-old buildings still standing in its downtown core.

As we look back on the town’s history, we note that the older part of Allan’s Home Hardware… at the corner of Third Street and Fifth Avenue is one of the oldest.

Public library archivist Ardis Proulx-Chedore says it was originally owned by a company based in Northwestern Quebec.

“George Taylor Hardware was also the local outlet for White Rose no-knock gasoline,” she adds.

Taylor Hardware also had branches in Hearst, Timmins, Swastika,, Kirkland Lake and New Liskeard.

Proulx-Chedore hosts “Archives Live” every Friday at 2:30pm on the library’s Facebook page.
