First COVID-19 case in James Bay-Hudson Bay region reported by PHU

UPDATE: Chief Mervyn Cheechoo of Moose Cree First Nation confirms that the infected person lives in Moose Factory.  In a statement, Chief Cheechoo says that person and his/her contacts are in isolation, and other people who might have been exposed will be contacted.

He urges Moose Factory residents to follow all the public health precautions.

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Ontario’s far north has revealed itself .

The Porcupine Health Unit says it’s in the “James and Hudson Bay Region”.  It doesn’t specify the gender of the person, and says the individual’s age is “in their 20s-40s”.

It does say, however, that the origin of the infection is still being investigated and the person is in home isolation.

This case brings the total in the broad geographic area served by PHU to 76, with three still active.

The health unit does not publish updated testing numbers on weekends.
