Farmland survey underway in region

If you are a farmer or own land in the region, you are being asked to take part in a short survey. The Northeast Community Network is compiling a list of farmland owners that want to be part of a database they can share with potential companies that are interested in farmland. Companies may be looking or land to grow food or in some cases keep small livestock on it.

Network chairman Gilles Matko says the amount of inquires they receive about land varies from community to community.

“It’s up to those land owners who may want to sold, rented or leased however they want to do it,” he said.

Participation in the survey is voluntary and landowner information is confidential. There is no cost to participate and landowners can remove their information from the database by request to the Timmins Economic Development Corporation. The online survey is facilitated by the independent consulting firm Harry Cummings and Associates and funded by OMAFRA.

Matko adds that there is no definite timeline for this survey.

“This project can take a long time to actually reach every potential land owner who we would like to have part of it,” he said. “That’s why we decided to send it out let everyone respond and then towards the end, we will probably put a deadline to finalize it.”
