A grad like no other for O’Gorman High School due to the COVID-19 pandemic

The only English Catholic high school in the region can’t bring its 75 graduates to a ceremony this year. So O’Gorman High School is taking the celebration to the grads.

Vice-principal Lauri-Ann Loreto Neal says administration had to come at it from a different direction because of social distancing requirements, to plan the day grads look forward to from the time they start high school.

“We feel for them that it’s been taken from them this year, and we want to make sure that we can ensure that it’s as special as it can possibly be, given our circumstance,” the VP says.

An online video will be recorded at the usual venue for an O’Gorman graduation, St. Anthony’s Cathedral.

“There will be some speeches from some important members of the community and from the school board,” Loreto Neal explains “ There will be a blessing from Bishop Poitras as well.  We will also see images of our graduates, so that we can celebrate them individually.”

And there will be a valedictory address and the announcement of certificates and scholarships.

Then during Graduation Week June22nd to 26th, each of the 75 grads will be visited at home.  Loreto Neal will only say that the visit will provide “a personal touch”.

O’Gorman serves Timmins, Matheson and Iroquois Falls.
