Coronavirus wipes out Summerfest

It’s a safe bet that there will be summer in Cochrane this year.  And it’s a sure bet that there won’t be a Summerfest.

Faced with all the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, the committee has decided to not hold the 2020 version.

Town councillor Shea Henderson is chair of the recreation board. He says plans will be picked up for next year, and some of the musical acts already lined up have confirmed they’re willing to perform in 2021.

“All the restrictions around COVID-19 came right about the same week that we were supposed to launch our marketing campaign,” Henderson comments.  “So our line-up is still a secret and it’ll be a secret until 2021.”

Henderson says the cancellation was inevitable, with so much up in the air over things like when crowds will be allowed to gather again.

He also says the community and its businesses are being hard hit,and the focus must be on

“And that was one of the considerations that went into it,” he adds.  “Do people have disposable income after all this is done? Are businesses ready to be sponsors again? Those are the things to think about as well, right?”
