Smooth Rock Falls says No to Evacuees this spring

The Province has been asking municipalities over the past week whether they are available to take Evacuees from the James Bay coast should there be flooding this spring. Smooth Rock Falls has joined Cochrane as communities opting out of hosting this year. Smooth Rock Mayor Mitch Arseneault says their Town council voted last Friday.

“It would put a strain on our hospitals and ambulance drivers and COVID-19 yes that is the big one,” Arseneault said.

“It’s scary for everyone no matter what size your municipality is. It’s all the same fears we all have.”

Kapuskasing and Hearst have both stated they will only take Evacuees under certain conditions ranging from a dire situation with flooding taking place to enough Personal Protective Equipment to take care of those who arrive from up the coast.
