Dealing with anxiety during pandemic

The program manager for the Cochrane-Temiskaming region of the Canadian Mental Health Association says a lot of anxiety at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic has eased off a bit.  Mark Lionello notes, however, that limited social contact is starting to get to people.

“We’re social animals.  We need to have contact,” he asserts. “We need to be able to interact.  And regardless of the fact you can still do it via telephone or through social media or what not, it’s not the same thing.”

Lionello doesn’t mean that as a negative.  He says we’d be worse off without social media, because it has kept our feelings of isolation from being even worse.

He also advises you to keep a routine – as difficult as it can be, working from home and having your kids with you.

“Going to bed at the same time.  Getting up at the same time.  Try to get exercise where you can.  I know the weather hasn’t been great or gyms aren’t open, but maybe that means getting out for a little bit every day, getting some sun, going for a walk, doing whatever you can to get moving as well.”

This is Mental Health Week across Canada.  The theme is “Getting Real”.

Lionello urges you to call the CMHA if you have questions or concerns, or are feeling anxious during COVID-19.
