COVID-19 ‘the biggest issue I’ve faced’: RN at Cochrane’s Lady Minto Hospital

The often unsung heroes known as nurses are under an incredible amount of stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.  They’re being called on to care for patients, while worrying about contracting the coronavirus and bringing it home to their families.

Lady Minto Hospital nurse John Trusz has been an RN since 2009.  He’s feeling the pressure.

“There have been calls to call anybody who can sort of volunteer or come out of retirement – doctor, nurse – just to come help out with workload.”

One way Trusz says you can help is avoid the hospital, adding, however that if you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go.

Meanwhile, he says when he was in school, instructors told them the big thing they went through was SARS in 2002 and 03.

“I remember them telling stories about that, where this is a big deal, you know.  Actual health care providers had died from this and a lot of people had died from it.  And yeah, COVID-19 would be the biggest issue I’ve faced.”

John Trusz and his fellow nurses will probably be too busy to even realize that it’s National Nursing Day on Wednesday, May 6th.
