First COVID-19 confirmed case in Timmins

Timmins has it’s first COVID-19 case. This was confirmed last night in a release from the Porcupine Health Unit.

According to the release, a man in his 50s developed respiratory symptoms after returning from international travel. He contacted the PHU on March 17th. The Cochrane District Emergency Medical Services paramedicine program conducted the test that same day at the man’s home. After testing, the man has remained isolated at home, following public health guidance and monitoring.

The P-H-U says that while it was not unexpected, the confirmed case reinforces the need for all residents to follow public health recommendations. The Porcupine Health Unit Press Release recommends:

* Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth unless you have just cleaned your hands
* Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue or into your arm, not your hand
* Stay home if you are sick
* Practice social distancing by avoiding close contact with people outside your immediate families. This means staying 2 metres apart from others while at work, and while running errands or attending appointments in the community.

It is also being advised that all international travellers should self isolate for 14 days after returning to Canada.
