How’s this for inspiration? – playing for a provincial curling championship in the home rink of Team Jacobs.
Abby DeJoseph and her team from the Cochrane Curling Club are doing that this week in Sault Ste. Marie. The girls under-18 title is up for grabs.
Coach Chris Wright says the rink qualified at an event in Cochrane in mid-February.
He says the biggest strength of the foursome led by Abby DeJoseph is its mental toughness.
“We don’t necessarily play on the bigger surfaces or come from the biggest club,” he points out, “but being able to roll with the punches through an event or through a season and working through difficulties and frustrations as a team, for sure the biggest strength.”
Wright says he’s impressed with how much Team DeJoseph has grown in the past year. He notes that coming from a smaller community means not as much ice time or as many opponents to play against.
“Being adaptable and going with the flow of things for girls that are, or anyone under the age of 18 is a really good life lesson and something they’ve been able to apply to the sport of curling as well.”
Two teams from this weekend’s competition will move on to the national championship in Sudbury.
