Annual ride proceeds go to Lady Minto chemotherapy room

When an annual event hits its eleventh year, it’s probably okay to call it a tradition.

Such is the Cochrane Vintage Riders Snowmobile Club’s Tom Saul Ride. Edition number eleven happens next Saturday, March 7th.

Executive member Dan Girard explains that it started out as a fun ride on vintage snowmobiles.  But shortly after the first one, member Tom Saul died of cancer.  So the ride was renamed in his memory.

“We collect money for cancer,” says Girard. “We donate it to our own local chemotherapy room at our local hospital here, the Lady Minto and it’s for care and comfort of patients while they’re taking treatments.”

Anyone on a snowmobile – vintage or modern – is invited on the 45-km ride.  Organizers ask for a ten-dollar minimum donation.

The ride goes from the Polar Bear Habitat to the Abitibi Campground for lunch, then comes back to town, ending at the curling club for a dinner that will cost you $25.00.

“We included dinner last year, because it was our tenth anniversary.  And it went over very, very well,” Girard comments. “So we decided to continue with the dinner.  It was kind of nice.  It was a bit of a gathering after.”

Bill Pudim will cater the dinner.
