Forums encourage seniors to walk outdoors

Walking is great exercise for senior citizens to stay fit and healthy.  So the Porcupine Health Unit is staging a series of winter walking forums across the district to encourage the activity.

April Jalbert is a public health nurse with the health and wellbeing team.  She says each forum will teach strategy to stay safe while staying active in the winter.

“We’ll have a common space where people will be able to freely participate in their activities,” she outlines, “ as well as a lecture-style room where we can listen to panelists explain the ins and outs of body mechanics, proper core function, how to properly walk in the winter, the best winter attire, etc.”

There will also be a lot of advice on how to walk outdoors without slipping or falling.

“Add assistive devices to canes or walkers if they need those, to wear proper footwear with grips, make sure that they walkways are clear, that there’s sand or salt, that there’s railings nearby, whole bunch of really good tips and tricks,” says Jalbert.
